Requirements to become a  
California Notary Public


How do I become a Notary Public?

To qualify to become a Notary Public you must:
 
  1. Be 18 years of age or older (there is no maximum age set by statute).

  2. Be a legal California resident.

  3. Complete a course of study approved by the Secretary of State.

  4. Satisfactorily complete and pass a written examination prescribed by the Secretary of State.

  5. Clear a background check
      6.  All applicants appointed or reappointed on
           or after January 1, 2008, must undergo a   
           back ground check by the Federal Bureau
           of Investigation as well as the California
           Department of Justice.

      7All applicants appointed or reappointed on
          or after  January 1, 2008, are required to
          attach a 2"x2"
  color passport photo of their
          person to the back of the completed notary
          public application form.

Requirements To Re-New the Notary Commission (3hr Class)

To qualify for the 3 hour re-fersher class:

You must  have taken the 6-hour class at least once.

  1. Your commission have not already expired  prior to your seminar  date.

  2. You must pass the state exam before you current commission expires. 
If you do not meet these qualifications  you must take the 6-hour class.

Cost become a Notary Public?
  1. Our Cost:
    SELF-STUDY COURSEi
    $29.95 for the 6 hr hour class for beginners.
    $19.95 for the 3 hour refresher class.

  2. LIVE CLASSES (exam immediately following) $69.95 for the 6 hour class for beginners
    $59.95 for the 3 hour refresher class.
  3.  $80 for the 6 hour private class.

  4. The state examine is an additional $40 to be paid in a separate check made payable to the Secretary of State at the time of the exam.

  5. There is an additional cost for the Live scan fingerprinting to be paid directly to the scanning company.

  6. The cost of a $15,000 surety bond and the optional error and omission insurance.

  7. The cost to register your notary commission and bond at your local county clerk's office.

  8. The cost of notary supplies, includes but not limited to: notary journal, seal, acknowledgment and jurat pads, pens, etc

Requirements to take the
State exam: 


1.  Students must provide  one of the following  
      photo ID, current or issued within the pas
      f ive  years.        
  • A drivers license or State DMV  I.D card
  • A Canadian or Mexican  driver's license
  • A US Passport or a Passport  by a issued by a foreign issued by a foreign government.
  •  A U.S. Military ID Card .
No other form of Identification is allowed


2. A 2"x2" color passport photograph of yourself.

3. The cost to take the exam is $40 for the first time.

4. Students that are re-taking the exam will pay a    
    lesser amount.


5. A check, money order or cashier's check for $40
   made payable to The 
Secretary of State, with the 
   candidate's name and the last four digits of    
    the Socia
l Security number written on it.

No cash is accepted.

6. A completed current application form.

7. The failed letter from the SOS if 
    re-ta
king the exam

The original Proof of Completion from your
      mandatory education class.


9. Two sharpened No. 2  lead pencils.

     Live Class Registration

1.   Six  hour class registration begins at 8 A.M.
       Class begins at 9 A.m

2.   Three hour class registration begins at 12:30 
      P.M. Class begins at 1 P.M.

3.   Notary exam for both classes begins at 4 P.M. 
      Both classes will that the same exam.

4.   The exam is 50 minutes and consists of 30 
      multiple choice questions.When you register for
      either of these live classes your are automatically
      registered for the state exam.  Students must 
      receive at least a 70% passing grade.

      On Line Registration

1.   
To register for the online classes, click on the tab for
          the class of your choice (3 hr or 6 hr class),  read the
          instructions provided prior to registering.

2.    To continue to registration, click on the link for
        your prospective class, then click on the book
        icon to continue to purchase.


3.   Add the item to the cart and continue to pay. 
     You may purchase using the credit cards listed or
      through Pay Pal. 


4.   When you have completed the required hours of
      study, go back to the website:
      http://notaryproseminars and click on the    
      Declaration tab for your completed class,
      complete and submit this form and your Proof  
      of Completion
will be e-mailed to you within
      24 hours.
